On This Day: Nirvana Unplugged Debuts on MTV

On December 16 1993, Nirvana's performance on MTV Unplugged aired for the first time. Nirvana's appearance differed from many Unplugged performances preceding and following it in that the setlist consisted mainly of lesser known original tunes and covers by such artists as David Bowie and Lead Belly. Also breaking from the show's tradition, Nirvana filmed its entire performance in a single take.

Although there were tensions during the rehearsals for the performance, the episode turned out to be one of the best and more memorable in the history of MTV Unplugged. This was also one of the last televised performances by Kurt Cobain, who died less than 4 months later.
