The Retro Mix Video of the Week:

The T.A.M.I. Show's 50th Anniversary

On October 28 and 29 of 1964, The T.A.M.I. Show concerts took place at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. With the acronym "T.A.M.I." alternately standing for "Teenage Awards Music International" and "Teen Age Music International"The T.A.M.I. Show is a landmark piece of pop culture history which featured some of the biggest acts of the era (including its hosts, Jan & Dean). The best footage from the two concerts was edited into a film (which was released on December 29, 1964). Over the years, The T.A.M.I. Show has rightfully earned its reputation as one of the greatest concert films ever.

Below are just a few of the highlights:

  • James Brown & the Famous Flames' scorching 4-song set.
  • The Barbarians' highly-energized performance of "Hey Little Bird", which featured a solo by their one-handed drummer Victor "Moulty" Moulton.
  • The gyrating dancers, one of whom was a 17-year old Teri Garr
  • The Miracles' electrifying performance of "Mickey's Monkey".

When the film was finally released on DVD in 2010 I wrote a review on my blog, which you can read here

To mark the The T.A.M.I. Show's 50th anniversary, I'll be doing a tribute on The Retro Mix (which airs from 6 pm to 9 pm) on Saturday November 1st. In addition to featuring most (if not all) of the songs performed in the film, I'll be spinning other oldies from the 50s through the early-mid 60s.

Below is the trailer for The T.A.M.I. Show
