Host Profile: J.L. Massimino

What's the name of your show? The J.L. Massimino Show

What's your show about and when does it air? Exposing listeners to music that I like. My tastes are all over the place and while my show typically plays "alternative" music, I enjoy playing whatever is in my brain that week. It airs Wednesdays from 9 pm to 11 pm. If you've missed any of my shows or just want to hear them again, please visit my Mixcloud page.

Is there a story behind your on-air name?  J.L. - my initials. My family has always called me J.L. - there were way too many people named Jack in my family and they didn't want me to be saddled with the name "Little Jack" for my entire life. J.L. sounds like a fake radio name so it works!

How long has your show been on the air? April 27, 2016 was my first show.

Tell us about a funny incident that happened during your show. The Improv Club meets during the first hour of my show so I learned pretty quickly to keep the studio door closed; a loud scene startled me before a talk break on my first show!

What do you like to do in your spare time? My wife, son and I spend time at home, catching up on our always too full DVR when we aren't busy going to concerts or doing things around Flint. I try to make time to hang in Detroit with my brother as often as our busy schedules permit. I have a driveway full of cars so something's usually in need of repair. Music is almost always on, either old favorites or something new, because silence is a real bummer.

Have you gotten any funny calls during your show? One time someone called in a request for a song from Glee. Yes, I watched the show but no, I don't really want to hear any of the songs from it again.

What is one of your most memorable concert experiences? I've been fortunate to have gone to over 100 concerts in the last decade-plus and have had many memorable experiences. One of the craziest was October 5, 2015 in Detroit. My brother and I had seen Kraftwerk once before, in 2005, and it was an amazing show. They came through again on their 3D tour and put on a visually stunning show at the Masonic Temple. Afterward, my brother and I drove over to MOCAD for the after party. The party was insane - the founders of Detroit techno (Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson) all did DJ sets and then - THEN! - Kraftwerk arrived. They spent some time in the DJ booth and then just hung around the crowd. We got to stand a few feet from one of the most influential electronic musicians in the world! It's a night my brother and I will never forget.

Tell us something about yourself that people might find surprising. I still prefer and purchase physical media (CDs, vinyl, cassettes) to digital media. The convenience of mp3s and streaming is nice, but the fidelity just isn't there.

In the movie "WKUF: The Untold Story", who would you cast as yourself? Steve-O, only because I look somewhat like him.

Host Profile: Vael

What's the name of your show? Mixed Reviews

What's your show about and when does it air? Mixed Reviews airs on Mondays from 10-10 midnight. The show features Japanese rock and pop with a couple of variants in the mix. We decided on this since my co-host, Hiro, also enjoys Japanese music and we thought nobody on air would create a similar show. It's called Mixed Reviews since people will either love or hate the music we play, including the hosts. Hiro and I tend to disagree on certain songs one or the other may like.

Is there a story behind your on-air name?  It originated from when I played a ton of WoW. It was the character name I used and it was based upon the letter æ. I always liked terms like æther and such from fantasy novels and games and found Væl was a great name. I've used it ever since.

How long has your show been on the air? Since November 2, 2015.

Tell us about a funny incident that happened during your show. Rants for days from me and Hiro.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Play video games, mainly Kantai Collection, and other strategy games that may exist. I also enjoy reading fantasy novels. I play a ton of Magic the Gathering and am a professional Twitch stream watcher. I always have a Twitch stream or music running on my second monitor and Kancolle on the first.

Have you gotten any funny calls during your show? Someone told me to argue with Hiro more. It worked out well.

I was able to meet the band and hug them, I have been a hardcore fan since I was 13 and 4 years later I got to meet them. I cried tears of joy (literally) but stopped immediately because I was wearing eyeliner xD I baked Andy cookies for his birthday and he took them so it was a pretty good day!
