Host Profile: DJ Gozza

What is the name of your show? The Gozza Strip

What is your on air name? Is there a story behind it?  DJ Gozza. Gozza has been my MC/Nickname since high school. It's a slicker version of my real last name.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I write lyrics, record, and perform either solo as Gozza or with my Hip Hop group the Artfull Dodgers. I also produce beats and run my own recording studio. You can always catch me vibing out to music or watching a good movie. I have huge record and DVD collections.

Tell us about a funny incident that happened during your show. Once a listener came down to the station and begged me to let him co-host my show. I had to tell him, "Sorry, I work alone. That's the way i like it."

Have you gotten any strange requests during your show? I get strange requests all the time. Especially since I only play Michigan Hip Hop on my show. Some of the strange requests include "The Battlestar Galactica" theme, and some weirdo wanted to hear a song by Charles Manson.

If you knew you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could choose only 10 songs, what would they be?

Wow, that's a hard one. Let me think........OK, here's my 10 Stranded Island jams-

Tell us something about yourself that people might find surprising. I write and direct my own movies.

In the movie "WKUF: The Untold Story", who would you cast as yourself? Jason Statham

Host Profile: Eddie Bladez

What is the name of your show? Bring tha Noize Radio

Is there a story behind your on air name? It's a derivative of my deejay name Eduardo Scizzahandz. It was many years ago, probably around 1994 or 95 when one of my emcees, Telly Tell a.k.a. Horeson J.A.E (from my group A Lab Cult/Car Salezmen Inc./Mala Gente) saw a college application laying around in the lab and noticed that my middle name was Eduardo. He said, "You should call yourself Eduardo Scizzahandz!!!" In Hip Hop, artists like to or USED to like to select names that embodied the b boy, braggadocio style of selecting attributes that distinctly, uniquely described their abilities. I was always known for scratching and cutting. You also had to be certain that you could back your name up. Haha. Previously my name was Dj Oro...the name change is more exciting wouldn't you agree?

What's your show about and when does it air? The finest in turntable rhythms and theatrics, basically...Hip Hop, Breakbeat, Jazz, Funk, Dance Hall, R and B, electro, fusion, supa dynamite soul, Old and New school...Spanish, Jamaican, Caribbean, and so much more. It currently airs on Saturdays from 10 am-noon. It also features musicians, poets, emcees, producers, promoters and of course skilled deejays.

How long has your show been on the air? Since 2011. It was part of the Mega Blast Monday line up including my turntable partner Dj Thunder of the Thunderstorm Mix Show, and the Gozza Strip

What do you like to do in your spare time? Coach and do everything with my son, watch sports, especially boxing, record excavating and record shopping, work out routines with my deejay crews. Making mixes, promoting the culture. I'm an agent for the International Hip Hop Parade scheduled this summer in the Bronx. I love traveling, going to concerts, holding open mics, emcee battles, freestylin'. and I'm in some Hip Hop groups for which I exclusively deejay. I also dj independently as well as with a company. I do studio work for hire, enjoy movies, family, crackin' jokes/pannin' havin' fun!

Tell us about a funny incident that happened during your show. Probably when I freestyled the weather forecast. Some cats heard it and were rollin'..talkin' about high pressure systems, rain events and so fourth..lol. Other times freestylin' and roastin' the other deejays on air.

Have you gotten any strange requests during your show? Not too many; when they hear the styles played, they usually catch on and most requests are related to what's being played. Since the show is pre-mixed and recorded, it's difficult to honor requests. There was an instance when this guy kept calling all of our shows one Monday tryin to get his stuff played...it was horrid so we kept passin' the buck like Michael Red...lol

If you knew you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could choose only 10 songs, what would they be?

1.) Fela Kuti- Water No Get Enemy
2.) Sade- Kiss of Life
3.) Hall and Oates- Do What You Want, Be What You Are
4.) Heather- Billy Cobham
5.) Rebel w/o a Pause- Public Enemy
6.) R.E.A.L.I.T.Y.- Black Moon
7.) Microphone Wanderlust- INI
8.)Tragos Amargos- Ramon Ayala
9.) Camino de Guanajuato- Vicente Fernandez
10.) Nautilus- Bob James

What is one of your most memorable concert experiences? In 96, me and my buddy plotted to get into St. Andrew's Hall-The Shelter in Detroit. The show was the Fugees, Bahamadia and The Roots, we had no $$ no tickets and still went out there to try to get in....after a couple of unsuccessful attempts, we got in carrying Hub's bass and an amplifier! We were roadies for the night. We met Lauryn Hill, Bahamadia and The Roots...the concert was MIND BLOWING and we saw it ALL from backstage! Unbelievable..

Tell us something about yourself that people might find surprising. That I can mix, blend cut and scratch Spanish music as well...that I use turntables.

In the movie "WKUF: The Untold Story", who would you cast as yourself? Esai Morales, Edward James Olmos, Psycho Les from the Beatnuts and George Lopez.

Host Profile: Xavier B

This is the first in a series of profiles we'll be doing on members of the on-air staff at WKUF.

What's the name of your show? The Retro Mix

What's your show about and when does it air? I play a wide variety of music from the 1940s through the mid 2000s. Each week's show is normally based on a theme, artist, genre or era of music.  I play artists as diverse as The Temptations, R.E.M., Nina Simone, Public Enemy, The Andrews Sisters, and Garth Brooks. Although I enjoy playing hits, I also feature songs/artists that don't get a lot of airplay. I discontinued my weekly show on 12/1/17. It now airs occasionally at various times. If you missed any of my shows or want to hear them again, please visit my Mixcloud page.

Is there a story behind your on-air name?  Xavier is my middle name and "B" is the first letter of my last name.

How long has your show been on the air? Since January 2005, which makes it the longest-running show on WKUF. It was originally called Spin City. The name changed to The Retro Mix in April 2008.

Tell us about a funny incident that happened during your show. On 8/13/10, my niece Pam co-hosted a show with me where we featured lesser-known Motown songs. She ripped many of her song selections to CD and I seem to recall watching her do it.  However, due to either a faulty disc or bad files, only a few of the songs made it to the CD. Unfortunately, we didn't discover this until we were on the air. Suffice it to say, there were quite a few holes to fill. For about 5-10 minutes, I was sweatin' like Shaq trying to fill those holes! Although it was chaos for a bit, the audience had no idea.

What do you like to do in your spare time? What the hell is spare time?! Seriously, I like to spend time with family/friends, listen to music (surprise, surprise!), travel, watch Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and DVDs (I cut the cable cord in November 2012), follow politics and sports, play cards/board games, stay active on social media, read Entertainment Weekly, and workout.

Have you gotten any funny calls during your show? Once, a young lady called to request something by a contemporary artist. When I told her I was playing all 80s music, she said "Oh, you're doing oldies". Another time (when my format was 70s, 80s, and 90s) a guy called and said, "Since you're doing oldies, can you play something by Alice in Chains?" Although I was amused because I consider "oldies" to be music from the 50s and 60s, I couldn't correct them because the term "oldies" means different eras to different people.

If you knew you were going to be stranded on a desert island, what are 10 of the songs you'd want with you?

  1. Young by Ruth B
  2. My House by Flo-Rida
  3. Roman's Revenge by Nicki Minaj
  4. Viva La Vida by Coldplay
  5. Welcome to Your Life by Grouplove
  6. Cups (When I'm Gone) by Anna Kendrick
  7. Lights by Ellie Goulding
  8. Ashes of Eden by Breaking Benjamin
  9. Alaska by Maggie Rogers
  10. Dangerous by Kardinal Offishall

What is one of your most memorable concert experiences? In November 2014, I saw Stevie Wonder at the Palace of Auburn Hills as part of his "Songs in the Key of Life" tour. Due to the title of the tour, I was only expecting to hear tracks from that album. However, Stevie then transformed himself into his alter ego "DJ Tick Tick Boom" and teased us by playing snippets of the studio versions from some of his greatest hits (including "Part Time Lover", "Higher Ground" and "Uptight"). He, his band, and back-up singers (including India.Arie) then did medleys of "Do I Do", "All I Do", "For Once in My Life, and "Master Blaster". They closed the show with full-length versions of "Superstition" and "My Cherie Amour".

Tell us something about yourself that people might find surprising. I am a huge Three Stooges fan

In the movie "WKUF: The Untold Story", who would you cast as yourself? Mekhi Phifer
